Meralco PowerGen Corp. is exploring ammonia co-firing for a proposed 1,200-megawatt coal plant in Quezon province to comply with government decarbonization mandates, as the project must transition away from coal by 2050. The Department of Energy has granted an exemption to the national coal ban for this initiative, which aims to serve 5 million households and create thousands of jobs. MGen's strategy includes expanding its capacity to 5,068 megawatts from both traditional and renewable sources by July 2025.
