Microsoft Partners with Veir to Develop High-Temperature Superconducting Technology for Data Centers
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
Microsoft is investing in high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology through a partnership with Veir to enhance energy efficiency in future data centers. HTS cables can transmit electricity with near-zero resistance, utilizing liquid nitrogen cooling to eliminate energy loss, unlike traditional copper or aluminum conductors.
Veir demonstrated the technology in November 2025, successfully delivering three megawatts through a single cable. The technology aims for commercialization by 2026, but challenges such as high material costs and cooling issues persist.
