Microsoft Plans Data Center on 356-Acre Site in Kent County, Michigan

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Microsoft Corp. submitted plans for a data center on a 356-acre site in Kent County, following its acquisition of 316 acres from Steelcase Inc. for $45.3 million in August 2024 and an additional 40.5 acres from Republic National Distributing Co. for $9.7 million in November 2024. The company seeks to rezone 40.5 acres to light industrial to facilitate the project.

Gaines Township planning officials recommended approval, stating the project would not negatively impact adjacent properties or wetlands. The site will combine previously acquired parcels and is intended to enhance the local tax base with minimal infrastructure demands.

Public hearings are scheduled before the planning commission's vote. Additionally, a significant data center project is underway in Lowell Township, indicating a growing market for data centers in Michigan.
