MISC and China Offshore Receive ABS Approval for Ammonia FPSO Design
MISC Berhad and China Offshore Engineering & Technology Company Limited obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for the design of their Ammonia Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit on December 2, 2025, at Marintec 2025 in Shanghai, China. The AiP confirms that the design complies with existing safety regulations and standards, allowing the project to advance to the next development phase.
The Ammonia FPSO concept adapts proven onshore production technology for offshore operations, converting unused hydrocarbons into high-value blue ammonia. The project aims for an annual production capacity of 1 million tons of liquid ammonia and is currently in the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, with a Pre-FEED study expected to complete in Q1 2026. The initiative is developed in collaboration with technology licensees KBR and LNT Marine, and aims to support low-carbon energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
