New Jersey Bill Could Increase Electricity Rates to Fund Nuclear Power Plant

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

Consumer groups in New Jersey oppose the New Jersey Energy Reliability and Affordability Act, which could raise electricity rates by $25 to $55 monthly to fund a new nuclear power plant. The bill, which has passed the state Assembly's Telecommunications and Utilities Committee, aims for the construction of an advanced nuclear reactor capable of generating at least 1,100 megawatts, enough for 1.1 million homes.

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities would seek loans from the U.S. Department of Energy, covering up to 80% of qualifying project costs. Proponents argue the measure addresses future energy demands and grid reliability, while opponents emphasize the financial burden on consumers already facing high utility costs. The bill is advancing without a comprehensive study of the state's energy needs.
