Opposition to High Voltage Station Near Google and Microsoft Data Centers in Wieringermeer

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

The Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier opposes a proposed high voltage station adjacent to Google and Microsoft's hyperscale data centers in Wieringermeer, which is situated over five meters below sea level. Dijkgraaf Remco Bosma stated that this location is unsuitable for critical infrastructure due to risks from rising sea levels and increased rainfall.

The province of North Holland and local municipalities are preparing to release a significant advisory regarding the new 380 kV electricity grid modification, which includes the high voltage station at Agriport. While the electricity demand in North Holland is rising, the location of the new high voltage lines is under debate, with potential impacts on UNESCO sites and natural reserves.

Microsoft is expanding its data center capacity, which significantly contributes to local electricity demand. Concerns remain about the implications of building infrastructure at such low elevations, with calls for alternatives at higher ground.
