Rep. Hwang Jeong-ah of the National Assembly has proposed an amendment to the Special Taxation Restrictions Act to classify small modular reactors (SMRs) as a national strategic technology, aiming to enhance institutional support amid increasing electricity demands from the AI industry.

The proposed changes would raise tax deductions for R&D expenses for both small and medium-sized enterprises and large enterprises, facilitating the growth of South Korea's advanced SMR technologies. This initiative follows a previous bill aimed at fostering R&D and commercialization in the domestic SMR sector.
