Tech Giants Turn to Jet Engines to Meet Rising AI Data Center Energy Demands
As AI data centers in the U.S. face soaring electricity demands, tech companies are increasingly turning to gas-fired power plants and modified jet engines for energy solutions. Boom, a startup developing supersonic jets, recently showcased a modified engine aimed at rapid deployment in data centers, while major turbine manufacturers like GE Vernova and Siemens Energy are experiencing overwhelming orders to support this shift. The International Energy Agency projects that gas turbines will provide approximately 260 terawatts of electricity for data centers in the coming decade, as the industry grapples with a projected increase in consumption from 200 terawatt-hours last year to around 600 terawatt-hours by 2035.
