Texas Firm Proposes Retiring USS Nimitz Reactors for AI Data Center Power in Tennessee
DEFENSEDATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
HGP Intelligent Energy, a Texas company, has proposed repurposing the nuclear reactors from the retired USS Nimitz aircraft carrier to power data centers in Tennessee. The plan involves transferring the two Westinghouse A4W reactors to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, aiming to generate up to 520 megawatts of electricity for AI infrastructure, potentially at a lower cost than building new reactors. This initiative marks the first effort to utilize supercarrier reactors for civilian power generation, aligning with U.S. goals to enhance domestic AI capabilities.
