UKAEA Launches ELSA Facility to Enhance Fusion Energy Development

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has unveiled the ELSA facility, designed to test remountable joints (RMJs) for future fusion power plants. ELSA simulates extreme temperatures to assess the durability of these joints, which are essential for maintenance access during operations.

UKAEA engineers aim to achieve resistances in high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils that are significantly lower than those in consumer electronics, enhancing plasma confinement with minimal energy use. The facility will support the development of HTS technologies and is strategically located near the STEP project’s West Burton site and the Advanced Manufacturing Park, facilitating collaboration in fusion technology advancement.
