U.S. National Science Foundation Transfers Supercomputer Management from NCAR to Unknown Operator
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
The U.S. National Science Foundation announced it will transfer management of the Derecho supercomputer, used by over 2,000 climate scientists, from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to an undisclosed third party.
The Cheyenne, Wyoming facility has been managed by NCAR since 2012. Scientists express concern about continuity in operations and potential impacts on climate research. The transition follows announcements of dismantling parts of NCAR, raising further uncertainty among researchers.
