U.S. Propane Exports Enhance Port Sustainability with Significant Emissions Reductions

SYNTHETIC FUELS

The U.S. is the largest propane exporter, with abundant supply and stable pricing. Partnerships involving PERC, MAFI, and PNCT have demonstrated that propane yard tractors can reduce NOx emissions by up to 99% and CO₂ by approximately 14% compared to diesel.

Renewable propane, currently used commercially, can achieve carbon intensities as low as 20-30 gCO₂e/MJ. Propane's operational efficiency allows for quick refueling and significant operating cost savings, with some fleets reporting nearly $1 million in annual savings.

Propane infrastructure is modular and can be deployed rapidly, supporting scalable rollouts. The low working pressure of propane allows for cheaper and lighter equipment. Additionally, propane tractors are quieter, improving working conditions. Renewable propane can be seamlessly integrated into existing operations, providing an immediate reduction in carbon footprint, and blending strategies will enable further carbon intensity optimizations.
