Virginia Nuclear Innovation Hub Receives $2.4 Million Grant to Develop Nuclear Workforce

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

The Virginia Nuclear Innovation Hub (VIN Hub) has received a $2.4 million grant from the Virginia Power Innovation Program to assess and develop the workforce needed for new nuclear power projects in Virginia. Research indicates that building and operating new nuclear reactors requires a diverse range of occupations beyond traditional nuclear roles, including health and safety specialists, electrical engineers, compliance officers, and more.

A report from Mangum Economics estimates that a 300-megawatt small modular reactor would necessitate approximately 305 jobs for construction and 141 for operation. VIN Hub aims to create a detailed workforce model and has initiated a small grants program to support educational institutions in nuclear workforce development. The hub also plans to discuss advanced materials and technology integration in the nuclear sector at a February summit.
