Zeeland Study Explores SMR Potential to Support Energy Transition in Netherlands
FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER
The Province of Zeeland has commissioned the SMR Zeeland 2050 study to assess the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs) as a sustainable energy source, with commercial deployment anticipated between 2035 and 2040. The study recommends public-private cooperation starting in 2026/2027 as Zeeland considers new nuclear projects, including two reactors expected to generate 9-13% of the region's electricity by 2035, while the existing Borssele reactor is set to close in 2033, with a possible extension to 2054.
